How to choose a plumber or builder in Dublin

In some areas it can be a real nightmare getting qualified plumbers and reliable builders. That episode of Fawlty Towers in which Fawlty gets a really dodgy builder to make some alterations over the weekend can be not far from reality. I just read of someone who hired a builder to renovate the area round the swimming pool, then she paid him after he had done the basic work, when he said that his finisher would come the next day to complete the work. He never turned up, and the cracks are still there. This was not in Dublin, the area where I am talking about, but you still need to be very careful.

The thing is that plumbing is a highly skilled job, so you need to make sure the plumber is qualified. I made that mistake once, not in Dublin, and had to get a proper plumber to do the whole job again. You don’t want to get into that situation. You can get the same problem if you employ builder in Dublin, but that does not mean there are no builders out there who are not well skilled, or who don’t overcharge, because there are.

To avoid these problems make sure that the firm you choose is listed in the Yellow Pages and then search for Plumber Dublin, If you find they have a website as well, that is encouraging, but you should also check that they are registered with Bord Gáis if they need to do any work on a heating system. Of course, you don’t that if you are getting them to repair a water leak or a damaged toilet.

The same approach is best for builders, too. Make sure you find a firm that has some sort of track record, preferably with some testimonials from past customers. You may think this will be very expensive but in the long run it will save you money.
